Established in 1999, the Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre is one of our nation's leading providers of advanced multidisciplinary medical services for animals. The Centre aims to provide clients, patients, and referring veterinarians with the best integrated veterinary care available, within the one complex.
As a Centre of Excellence, our specialists are committed to employing evidence-based practice to ensure animals receive medical care comparable to that of human medicine. The Centre’s collaborative approach to care draws upon the extensive skills of its specialists within the areas of internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, oncology, and behavioural medicine.
The Centre also has Victoria’s only combined medical and surgical oncology team onsite, with full internal medicine support to address a range of conditions often associated with cancer.
Staff at MVSC understand and value the bond between clients and their pets. We aim to always cater to the emotional needs of clients, while keeping in mind the medical needs of their pets. We aspire to provide the best care to help pets live healthier, happier lives.
As referral medicine providers, we maintain a strong relationship between the client, patient, and referring veterinarian. We discuss the diagnostic and treatment options available with our client to enable them to make an informed choice regarding their pet’s treatment.
The MVSC is located in two central Melbourne locations to serve our clients better; our main centre is in Glen Waverley, with specialist services available at Essendon Fields within the Animal Accident and Emergency Centre at Essendon Airport.
At the Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre we believe in a multidisciplinary approach to your pet’s health. We draw upon the extensive skills of the Centre’s areas of specialty: internal medicine, dermatology, surgery, oncology, and behavioural medicine.

A veterinary specialist has a level of skill that is well above that of a practitioner in the same discipline. Veterinarians must meet stringent requirements relating to qualifications, experience, and training to be registered as specialists. Under both Australian and New Zealand legislation, only registered specialists may claim Specialist status.
To have a Specialist title a veterinarian will have graduated from a five-year Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree, practiced for four years as a veterinarian in general practice, completed a three to four-year residency program in their area of specialisation, and passed examinations to achieve fellowship with the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists (ACVS). Veterinary specialists must also be registered as specialists with the veterinary board in the jurisdiction in which they practice.
For more information about Specialist qualifications, visit the ACVS website at: www.acvs.org.au.
Veterinary specialists serve as an extension of general veterinary practice offering advanced knowledge and equipment to diagnose and treat your pet more effectively. In some cases, just like in human medicine, a specialist may be required to manage your pet’s problem.
As we are not a primary health provider, you will need a referral from your veterinarian to see the specialists at our centre. Once your veterinarian suggests a referral to a specialist, a referral form will be completed. Your veterinarian will either contact us directly or ask you to contact us to make an appointment.
The MVSC offers a central connection between you, your referring veterinarian, and the other specialists within the Centre to ensure the successful evaluation and ongoing treatment of your pet. Following your consultation, and any subsequent diagnostics or procedures, our specialists will communicate with your referring veterinarian to assure a smooth transition and continuity of care.
If you are concerned about your pet's diagnosis or care, please speak with your veterinarian about a referral to a specialist.

Each of our seminars draws on the expert knowledge of leaders in their field of specialty.
Behavioural Medicine / Internal Medicine seminar: Monday, 20 September 2010
The Process of Elimination – to pee or not to pee Presenters:
Dr Kersti Seksel (Specialist in Behavioural Medicine) Dr Darren Merrett (Specialist in Canine Medicine)
The first indication that an animal is unwell is that the animal’s behaviour changes. This change is what usually prompts owners to make an appointment to see their veterinarian. The behavioural changes are often attributed to either a behavioural cause or a medical / organic cause. However, the relationship between medical problems and behavioural problems is often more intimate.
With any problem, medical or behavioural, the predisposing factors need to be identified and then addressed. In order to resolve a behavioural problem a thorough behavioural history, as well as a clinical examination is necessary. Medical reasons need to be examined, treated or eliminated as contributing factors. Sometimes these behavioural signs are in fact part of another behavioural complex and this also needs to be considered when advising a treatment protocol.
Registrations: Are now open and will close Friday, 17th September 2010.

The Centre provides the most advanced diagnostics, medical treatment, and surgery in Victoria.
We are committed to providing animals with the highest quality specialist veterinary treatment available. Our mission is to provide the best care to help pets live healthier, happier lives.
We welcome those who share the same commitment to excellence, and who have a passion for what they do, to join the team at the MVSC.
Currently, we do not have any positions available.
Construction work on a totally new and purpose built veterinary specialist centre in Essendon Fields is underway. The centre will sit opposite the Animal Accident & Emergency (AAE) centre at the Essendon Airport.
The MVSC currently provides specialist services within AAE 24-hour emergency centre. However, the level and scope of services provided have been governed by our ability to operate from a satellite site.
The new centre provides an exciting opportunity for the MVSC to continue to offer the very best specialist veterinary services to meet the needs of our referring veterinarians. A proposed plan and layout of the new facility is detailed below.
