The Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre prides itself on the dedication and compassion of its highly experienced veterinary nursing staff. We have 18 nurses who play a key role providing a high standard of care for hospitalised animals. Clients can be assured that their pets will receive high quality nursing care at the MVSC.
Veterinary nurses perform a wide range of duties, including:
·Providing safe and effective animal care.
·Holding animals while the vet examines them.
·Maintaining equipment.
·Preparing animals for surgery.
·Carrying out diagnostic tests and administering medication (under veterinary supervision).
·Collecting samples.
·Advising clients about nutrition and animal care.
·Setting up for chemotherapy treatments and being competent with PhaSeal System.
·Providing support and advice to clients whose pets are undergoing treatment for cancer.
·Providing general administrative support.
Surgery nurses
DEB
Deb (Surgery nurse) has been a veterinary nurse for 11 years, which has included two years at the RSPCA in London. She has worked for the MVSC for almost three years. She is currently studying for her Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Surgical) at Box Hill Institute of Tafe.
KELLY
Kelly has worked as a Veterinary Nurse for over six and a half years and will commence her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing soon. She recently joined the MVSC team. Kelly is a registered wildlife carer and looks after orphaned and injured native wildlife. She has a special interest in surgical and reptile nursing. She owns Duke the St Bernard, Rex a little fluffy, a galah called Trevor and an assortment of replies.
MEAGHAN
Meaghan has been a veterinary nurse for six years. She has recently come back from a working holiday where she spent time working at the RSPCA in Birmingham. She has recently joined the MVSC team and is completing a Diploma in Veterinary nursing (surgical) at Box Hill Institute of Tafe.
RACHEL
Rachel has worked as a veterinary nurse for five years, though since high school, has always worked with animals. She has completed her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, has a special interest in surgical nursing and will commence her Diploma of Surgical Nursing soon. Rachel owns three dogs, Taya a Bichon Frise X poodle, Brandy a Poodle X Shih Tzu and Ella an English staffy. She also owns a Ragdoll cat called Jaspa.
Dermatology nurses
KATE
Kate (Dermatology nurse) started working at the MVSC in late 2006. She completed her Animal Technology Diploma and Veterinary Nursing Certificate in Canberra, while working in a small and large animal clinic on the outskirts of the city. After moving to Melbourne, Kate worked at a local clinic for five years. Kate owns a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Taz and, her best friend, a tortoiseshell cat named Ally.
LEAH (TEAM LEADER)
Leah (Dermatology nurse) has been working at the MVSC since December 2003. She worked in general practice prior to the Centre. She is a dog lover and owns Brock, a Staffy cross, and Chev, a Rhodesian Ridgeback cross. She also has a Green-cheeked Conure called Angus.
MANDY
Mandy (Dermatology nurse) commenced working at the MVSC in December 2007 after spending some time overseas in South Africa at a monkey reserve and having completed an animal technology course. She is currently undertaking a veterinary nursing course. She has a Maltese cross at home called Taylor.
RACHEL
Rachael (Dermatology nurse) started working at the MVSC in early 2008 after working in general practice for a number of years. She loves dogs and cats and also has keen interest in personal fitness. She has her certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.Rachel has two cats and a rabbit.
Oncology & Medicine nurses
ELISE
Elise has worked as a veterinary nurse for eleven years. She completed her Certificate IV in 2003 and is in the process of completing her Diploma in Emergency and Critical Care. Elise is also a member of the AVN. She has a special interest in behaviour and medicine and has two 11 year old cats called Bonnie and Buster.
JAYNE (TEAM LEADER)
Jayne has been nursing for almost 10 years, including five years in a small animal general practice and five at the MVSC. Jayne has completed two Diplomas of Applied Science — one in Animal Technology and the other in Laboratory Sciences.
NAARAH (TEAM LEADER)
Naarah (Medicine & Oncology nurse at Essendon Fields) has been working as a veterinary nurse for 12 years, mainly in the greater Melbourne suburbs. She completed her Diploma in Animal Technology in 2000 and has been working with the MVSC since 2006. Naarah primarily co-ordinates the Essendon Fields MVSC site.
NINA (TEAM LEADER)
Nina has been working in general practice for nine years and has completed her Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in 2001. She has been with the MVSC for almost a year. Nina has an interest in cat and dog diseases and nutrition. During her nursing career, she has also worked with wildlife through various clinics.
PAMELA (MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICAL OFFICER)
Pamela is originally from Ireland and has been nursing for nine years in both large and small animal practices. Pamela has completed her Diploma in Veterinary Nursing, Ireland in 2005, and has worked at the MVSC for six months. Pamela has a great interest in Internal Medicine and is being trained in Oncology.
SARAH
Sarah, originally from New Zealand, has been living in Melbourne for 15 months. Sarah completed a Certificate in Veterinary Nursing in 2001 and has worked in both small and large animal practices here and overseas. Sarah has been with the MVSC for a year. She has an interest and love for horses and has competed horses from an early age.
Night nurses
STEPHANIE
HENRY
Henry completed his veterinary science degree at the University of the Philippines in 2001 and worked at a small animal practice for six years. He migrated to Australia with his family in 2007 and worked as a surgical and intensive care nurse for three years and has recently joined the MVSC this year.
