AFTER a 2300km trip south to see a specialist, outback dog Rosie is treading the road to recovery.

Rosie had life-saving spinal surgery in Melbourne after an emergency flight from Alice Springs six weeks ago.

Daily swimming and underwater treadmill work is helping strengthen the red dog's leg muscles.

But while Rosie is keeping her head above water as she recovers from sudden paralysis, owner Jane Coleman is drowning in the costs of keeping her canine companion in constant rehab in a strange city.

People have given them emergency accommodation but life without a fixed base and transport is taking a toll.

"Rosie must continue her daily rehabilitation in Dandenong and without a car it is hard to get her there," Ms Coleman said.

"I've been shown wonderful professionalism by the staff at Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre and kindness and compassion from strangers while we have been here," she said.

"But as of today we are pretty well homeless and without a car and we are expecting to need to stay another two months for Rosie to make as much progress as possible."
