Services of the Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre

The veterinary referral services presently offer specialist care in the following disciplines: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Dermatology, Oncology/Cancer Care and Animal Behaviour.

Internal Medicine sees referral cases such as Diabetes, liver conditions, heart conditions, respiratory conditions, Immune Mediated diseases, etc. They utilise such diagnostic testing as radiography, ultrasonography, MRI, endoscopy and complex laboratory testing.

Surgery handles a whole range of complex surgical procedures such as fractures, congenital abnormalities, wound reconstruction/repair, tumour removal, cruciate repair and neurosurgery (brain and spinal) procedures. MRI, specialised radiograph, fluoroscopy and arthroscopy are commonly used diagnostic procedures.

Dermatology handles everything to do with skin and ears, such as skin and ear infections, allergies, immune mediated skin diseases, skin tumours, etc. Diagnostic testing includes skin testing for airborne allergies, skin biopsy, endoscopy of the ears and in-house laboratory testing on skin and ear samples.

The Oncology/Cancer Care department is for the diagnosis and treatment of cancers. Therapies range from oral medicines to injected chemical chemotherapy. The type of treatment is decided upon depending on the type of cancer present and the wishes of the pet owner. Diagnostic procedures include fine needle biopsy, bone marrow testing, radiography, ultrasonography, MRI and laboratory testing.

Animal Behaviour is offered by Dr.Kersti Seksel that includes the identification of behaviourial problems with implementation of behaviour modifers with on-going management.
